People encouraged to better secure online accounts following Yahoo breach by Online Security

 

Residents who use Yahoo Mail are being encouraged by the S.C. Department of Consumer Affairs to take action to secure their online accounts following the announcement last month of a massive breach.

 

During the last two weeks of September, Yahoo announced that at least 500 million user accounts had been compromised.

 

An investigation by Yahoo following suspicions of an attack in July uncovered a far larger, allegedly state-sponsored attack in recent weeks, according to the Associated Press.

 

“We take these types of breaches very seriously and will determine how this occurred and who is responsible,” the FBI said in a statement last week.

 

Given the importance most people place on protecting personal information, the Department of Consumer Affairs is encouraging Yahoo Mail users to take action by following several tips, said Megan Stockhausen, communications coordinator with the agency.

 

  • Change the account password and security questions immediately. Use strong, creative passwords (uppercase, lowercase and special characters) and don’t share them with anyone. Also, don’t use the same passwords or security questions for multiple accounts, especially when using an email address as the login name on a site.

 

  • Watch out for phishing attempts, which is defined by asking for personal or sensitive information via a phone call, text or email is a tactic used by scammers. Never reply to texts, pop-ups, or emails that ask for verification of personal information. Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from suspicious emails or texts.

 

  • Closely monitor financial and benefits statements/accounts. Check all monthly statements and account activity, especially for financial accounts saved as payment options on internet merchant sites.

 

Review them carefully and notify the financial institution/provider as soon as an unauthorized or suspicious item is spotted.

 

  • Consider a fraud alert and security freeze. Scammers may use the stolen information to open new accounts.

 

A fraud alert and security freeze are free security measures for a credit report. A fraud alert tells a business accessing the report to take extra steps to verify that the person holding the account is the one seeking its goods/services.

 

When a security freeze is in place, no one can access the report without the account holder approving it.

 

Stockhausen said these tips can help anyone trying to secure any personal online information.

Of course any time we expand our knowledge our life changes. However the context of Live Changing Event is much bigger than gaining knowledge and expanding our skills. “Life Changing” is one of those truly “WOW Moments” even with the wow word being more than overused by many at this time.

What Really Happened on Day 4 of The Learning Ethics and Money Seminar?

Once our understanding of key principles and definitions was clear, we were ready for our assignment. After a couple hours of practice we were left to work. I still didn’t want to do this. However I made a commitment to follow the instructions. The assignment was very clear: begin writing the overts and withhold of your life following a precise formula for presenting the detail. To make sure there is no mistake, Meir Ezra requires each person to write one personal overt in the prescribed format and show it to him to confirm you know how to do it. I did that and started.

What Is An Overt and Withhold

Very simple an overt is something I did to someone else that I would not want done to me. For example I promised to deliver a report by 4 PM and didn’t do it because I was chatting on twitter. A withhold is similar only you are withholding from someone else an event or information that because you withheld it your relationship is weaker. For example you tell your spouse you are working late and in reality you are drinking with your friends and watching the game. The principle is that when we are responsible for an overt or withhold we develop a pattern that justifies the action or withhold. You will need to come to the seminar for the depth of this message and to understand the power of the O-W process.

I Wrote For About 4 Hours

I know what you are thinking – this guy has done a lot and withheld a lot. I was thinking the same thing. At one point I told Meir “my eyes hurt and head hurts” he gave me short explanation and said “keep writing”

We were alert to the possibility of reaching a moment when we felt relief. Well into the process, as I was feeling worse I thought “well there’s some bullshit!”

But Then – BAM!

I could see a pattern to my life. I could see why certain parts of my life are void of experiences I want to have. I clearly could see how I created any experience I label as “not preferred”. That clarity is very life changing because once I see the pattern I can break the pattern of what I have been doing or not doing that blocks my true potential.

BP America, Inc. announced today it will donate $1 million to support disaster relief efforts in Louisiana and Mississippi following Hurricane Isaac.

The donation will be made to the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army and divided equally between the two hardest-hit states.

“This assistance cannot fix all that has been broken by this natural disaster, but we hope it can help some of those in need today and contribute to a sustained recovery effort in the months ahead,” said Crystal E. Ashby, Executive Vice President of Government and Public Affairs for BP America.

The storm forced BP to evacuate workers from offshore platforms and drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as from onshore facilities in south Louisiana and Mississippi, where hundreds of BP employees live.

Separate from this donation, BP is also providing assistance to our employees and their families in the region.
